Simple Workflows Run Better Than Complex Ones
When I help people set up their first GoHighLevel workflows, the instinct is often to build something elaborate. But a simple workflow that runs reliably every time is far more valuable than a complex one that occasionally breaks or sends the wrong message.
Core Design Principles
One Trigger per Workflow
Start each workflow with a single, specific trigger. "Contact form submitted on the homepage" is better than "any form submitted." Specific triggers give you better control and make debugging easier.
Test at Every Step
Add a step. Test it. Add another step. Test again. Testing incrementally means you know exactly what is working and what is not at every stage.
Exit Conditions First
Before adding the first action to a workflow, decide what should stop the workflow. Set those conditions first. This prevents the most common automation mistake: messages going to people who should not receive them.
Keep Messages Short and Human
Write every automated message as if you are texting a friend about business. Not a formal letter. Not a marketing email. A direct, warm, natural message.
The First Three Workflows to Build
- New lead response — immediate reply to any form submission
- Appointment reminder — 24 hour and 1 hour reminders before any booking
- Post-service follow-up — thank you and review request after a job is complete
